Here at Understanding Institute we believe in the innate wonder within humans which serves to propel them into the unknown, with hardly a solid notion of what might be required, and pull them through the other side with insight and the ability to articulate their understandings.
Math is but one focus of this experience... herein (at UI) we explore and help others to better grasp how formal math and science learning might be integrated into the natural human social experience. An experience which is not merely a passive reception of "knowledge" event, but rather, as an active and exploratory consensus building social event. An event which leads to deeper understanding and rationale development. Humans learn through socialization and play... to deny that fundamental and observable reality is to cast our efforts into folly with the hopes of new outcomes while employing old, or outmoded, strategies and procedures. Let us begin to make our paradigm shifts as education professionals now. To tarry is to lose opportunities which should be ours (or others) for the experiencing. Understandings which lead us to our best and most productive selves. This is the "self" which society so desperately hungers for in these rapidly changing times... a "self" which society needs and deserves. A "self" with collaborative, rationale developing, and respectful disagreement skills to lead us into an uncertain and, at times, tumultuous future.
